History and symbolism

The obelisk is a monolithic monument which has its origins in ancient Egypt. Together with the pyramids, it is one of the greatest expressions of Egyptian monumental art. It is characterized by the elongated and thin quadrangular shape, ending with a pyramidal tip.

Calacatta Viola is mainly used for floorings, vertical coverings or furnishing complements in interior spaces and in polished or honed finishes. The Breccia Medicea was widely used by Cosimo I de’ Medici, lord of Florence, who had a monopoly on the quarries in Seravezza, and made the Breccia Medicea the symbol of his power by having it used in Florence Cathedral, the Pitti Palace and the Medici Chapels. Even today, when visiting the main museums in Florence, one finds Calacatta Viola used for door frames, fireplaces or cladding.
