Portoro black marble capital or base
Height 40cm, Diameter 20cm, Upper capital 35x35cm. Weight about 35 kg. BLACK PORTORO marble.
Classical capital or pedestal handcrafted in Italy from the highest quality materials. Destined by nature to last, marble is here worked with the canons of excellence and it seems, even in photography, to palpate all its robust essence.
The capital represents the upper element of the vertical support of the architectural orders. Its decorative function is to mediate between the curved surface of the column shaft and the rectilinear surface of the lintel.
The column, like many vertical elements, symbolically connects Earth and Heaven, becoming a symbol of humans’ gratitude to the gods, as well as of stability, strength and perfect balance. The charm of natural stone, with its unrepeatable veining, combined with craftsmanship, make each of these objects a unique and unrepeatable piece.
THE MATERIAL.
Portoro marble, known in France as porte d’or, is extremely refined, employed since the time of the ancient Romans. The surface is marked by a bright, very intense black color due to the pigmentation of organic materials of various kinds. The marble in question is also furrowed with yellowish and golden veins, sometimes white, determined by the presence of a particular mineral, pyrite, and ochre substances. The whole is enriched by slightly lighter shades and whitish spots that experts like to liken to brush strokes-the overall effect is extraordinarily elegant and aesthetically pleasing. Portoro black marble is typical of the province of La Spezia, especially the municipality of the same name and the Portovenere area. Given the beauty of the color combinations, slabs of this marble are not infrequently used to decorate the interiors of churches, hotels, and important residences. In addition, because of its resistance to moisture and temperature changes, the rock in question is used for rooms such as the bathroom and kitchen.
