The Pink Marble or Candoglia Marble has been known since Roman times, the first quarries date back to the Augustan age and were exploited until the late imperial age, given that finds, especially sarcophagi, in Candoglia marble were found in Milan, Pavia and also in Turin. The most important use of this marble is in the construction of the Milan Cathedral.
In 1387 the lord of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti granted the use of the Candoglia quarries to the Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo to extract marble for the construction of the cathedral.
