The Lecce stone

Precious ally of the modern concept of living, Lecce stone has earned a place of honor in contemporary art, design and furnishings. Wealth, beauty, solidity, are the three attributes that best define a material that has made, and continues to do, the history of a place.

The “Pietra di Lecce” is one of the precious jewels of the Meditarrenean nature, the stone of the Baroque and of Lecce architecture. It is a typical sandstone of Salento, a limestone rock extracted mainly in the hinterland, whose shades of color can vary from white, pink ivory to straw yellow.

Among its peculiarities there is undoubtedly the containment of shell fragments, small fossils that geologically enrich the structure, but also clays and quartzes that are added to a series of minerals that fortify it and make it even more fascinating and durable. The Lecce stone emerges from the ground in a natural way and is found throughout the Salento area, in immense quarries up to fifty meters deep.

Since the dawn of time, one of the primary needs of the concept of “living” of man has been to procure, tame, confine and maintain the fire using it to illuminate, heat, and cook. The fireplace owes its birth to the Normans, but knows its splendor in the era of Louis XXVI.
Of course, in the modern world the need is often purely aesthetic and decorative, but the fireplace remains the undisputed symbol of family warmth and conviviality.
